Gatecrash in a wedding

This afternoon I had the opportunity of doing something I wanted to do for a long time: to gatecrash in a wedding. I tell you what happened in case you want to know how an Indian wedding is. In the afternoon, I heard some music in the street. Then I realized that some musicians were playing drums and trumpets, while accompanying a groom and some people to the church, to celebrate a wedding. In this kind of groups, usually the bride and the groom ride a white horse but not in this case. It looked a humble wedding. I hadn’t anything more interesting to do so I decided to join them.

The celebration had held in a Methodist church. The Christian community in India is fractured into a multitude of established churches and new evangelical sects, some of them with so curious names such as “Christ warriors” or “Happy Trinity Church”. Once the wedding mass had finished, all people went towards a nearby school to continue the feast. We entered in an assembly hall and we sat down on plastic chairs but the newly-weds sat down on a throne on the stage. Then some relatives and friends started to make boring speeches and they song some poems. Once the humble spectacle was over, the newly-weds remained in their throne while receiving the gifts and congratulations of friends and relatives. In the meantime, some people were towards the next assembly hall to the wedding reception. The meal was done in the traditional style: spicy rice with meat served on banana leaves and eaten with the hands.

I was lucky because Indians usually don’t talk each other while eating, even in special celebrations such as weddings. They just eat and when they finish the meal, they leave the dining room as soon as possible. So it was the way of avoiding awkward and embarrassing questions such as “what are you doing here?” or “who invited you to the feast?” I really enjoyed the meal. The rice was delicious and for first time in India I ate mutton and ice-cream. But when I left the dining room, I realized that in the next assembly hall some different people were holding other wedding reception. Obviously, I didn’t have dinner again but I just went in to taste other different dessert. I think seriously that I should stay some more days in this city, just in case I could join to other wedding receptions.
