Maybe you wonder where I am. It is quite easy to explain it. Look at a map of India. The South end, the land’s end of the country, where the Indian Ocean meets the Arabian Sea, is the exact point where I am. Kanyakumari is the name of the town and it means “goddess Kanya”. The place is essentially a pilgrimage town. Pilgrims come here to visit the temple and bathe in the sacred waters. In the land’s end there are the ruins of an ancient temple and a small beach where some people look for some treasures.
On a nearby rocky island, about four-hundred metres off-shore, there is another temple. This one is dedicated to Swami Vivekananda, one of India’s most important religious figures. The huge statue on the small island is not of Vivekananda but of Thiruvalluvar, an Indian poet. It’s said this monument is the Indian “Statue of Liberty”. There is a pair of traveller socks which has also seen the subcontinent end skyline.
