Gem
A chapter of a book of the Spanish writer Juan Antonio Vallejo-Nágera is titled: “Gems in the dump”. It deals with some special and sensitive people that he knew in a psychiatric hospital which he managed in the 50´s. It wouldn’t be fair to compare India with a dump, although some towns and cities look like it. But, many times, this metaphor comes to my mind. In a so hard and difficult country like this, where most of the people approach to the foreigners looking for some benefits, you can also find some gems. It is not easy and you have to look for it properly. Up until now, I’ve found a nice gem. He is Narinderjit Singh, the man who hosted me for a month and a half and of whom I’ve written about other times. He, sometimes, told me: “life gave me my wife, my sons and my granddaughter as a gift. I also have a nice house and my own business. I can’t ask for anymore. Now I only want to share everything I have and take care of the friends who come to visit me”. He’s like a beautiful gem difficult to find.
