Sikhs again

Sikhs always have had a very strong identity. In the seventies appeared an extremist group who fought to get an independent Sikh nation. Indira Gandhi, at the beginning, supported them just to make the moderate Sikhs less powerful as political opponents. But those radical Sikhs became stronger and started to claim their aims in a violent way, making terrorist attacks and murders. In 1984 they decided to shut themselves down in the Temple with plenty of weapons and ammunition. Indira Gandhi ordered the Army to oust them. Then it happened a cruel battle in which hundreds of Sikhs and Indian soldiers were killed. The Temple was also half-destroyed. Some weeks later Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikhs bodyguards. Narinderjit, my host, who is one of the most peaceable people I've known, admitted: "I'd also kill anybody who tried to damage the Golden Temple".
